“Poverty makes us all poor”

Understanding will grow that sustained poverty is expensive, debilitating, and unsettling.

With regard to our Trend of Poverty, what should today's educational leaders consider when forecasting and planning for the future of learning in the year 2020?
Our group actually decided to look at our trend and how the concept of fostering resiliency positively impacts opportunity and hope in the face of poverty.

In a review of the research on resiliency, we found several positive action strategies.

=Your Task!!!!!! When visitng our wiki, we have listed the strategies with an example of each underneath. Your job is to add additonal examples under each category that would incorporate the action strategy.=

1. Offer opportunities to develop attachment relationships
*Adult mentors that follow students throughout the grades in each building

2. Increase students' sense of mastery in their lives
*Recognizing the special talents of all students whether they be academic or outside the academic realm

3. Build social comeptencies as well as academic skills
*Cooperative learning that includes accountable talk
*More emphasis on active student learning

4. Reduce the stressors children do not need to face
If homework is an area of difficulty for a sdtudent, give the students resources and a place to complete homework where they will be successful
Provide financial assistance in a seamless manner so student do not have to worry that they will not be able to participate

5. Generate school and community resources to support the needs of children
*Build stronger connections with community agencies so school personnel can direct parents who need their services as well as get input on the needs of particular students
