Society for Curriculum Development (ASCD), are companion publications. In Sixteen Trends, Gary Marx
directly addresses the trends indicative of today's world and connects them to implications for education, our communities and our society as a whole.

Trend 1: Aging: For the first time in history, the old will outnumber the young.
Trend 2: Diversity: Majorities will become minorities, creating ongoing challenges for social cohesion.
Trend 3: Social & Intellectual Capital: Social and intellectual capital will become economic drivers, intensifying competition for well-educated people.
Trend 4:Technology:Technology will increase the speed of communication and the pace of advancement or decline.
Trend 5: Generations: The Millennial Generation will insist on solutions to accumulated problems and injustices, while an emerging Generation E will call for equilibrium.

Trend 10:Personal/Planetary Security:Common opportunities and threats will intensify a worldwide demand for planetary security.
Trend 11: Polarization: Polarization and narrowness will bend toward reasoned discussion, evidence, and consideration of varying points of view.
Trend 12: Interdependence & International Learning:As nations vie for understanding and respect in an interdependent world, international learning, including diplomatic skills, will become basic
Trend 13: Personal Meaning: Greater numbers of people will seek personal meaning in their lives in response to an intense, high-tech, always on, fast-moving society.
Trend 14: Opportunity & Hope: Understanding will grow that sustained poverty is expensive, debilitating, and unsettling.
Trend 15:Career Adaptability: Pressure will grow for society to prepare people for jobs and careers that may not currently exist
Trend 16: Educators/High Demand: Competition will increase need to attract and keep qualified educators.

As visionary leaders, we will review, discuss and consider one of the 16 trends, in collaborative groups, determine our foundational knowledge and undertake a discovery exercise by answering the guiding questions and later share with the entire group. Steps to complete this project:

Future-Focused Leadership: Preparing Schools, Students, and Communities for Tomorrow’s Realities**, focuses on leadership and communication and provides ways that changes in today's society can be developed into a vision for the future. This title features a section called
the “12 Guiding Principles for Leaders Capable of Creating a Future," which can be summarized as follows:
• Curiosity, persistence, and genuine interest are the main power sources for futures thinking.
• Breadth and depth are both important.
• Leaders connect the dots and seek common ground.
• There are more than two sides to most issues.
• The future is not necessarily a straight-line projection of the present.
• Enlightenment and isolation are becoming opposites.
• Peripheral vision can help us avoid being blind-sided.
• A belief in synergy can spark knowledge creation and breakthrough thinking.
• Collateral opportunity and collateral damage both deserve our attention.
• Bringing out the best in others is basic.
